Feeling exhausted today? When we get run down [with no rest in sight], it is like a dull ax in the hands of a woodsman. It is not a skill to make a dull ax work more. It’s a skill to recognize the fact that the ax is dull. (Eccl. 10:10) What can we do today to acquire this skill?
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can make your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world’s darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.…” – Eph. 6:10-12
Are you going through the motions of life these days? The ax may be dull.
Are you anxious with fear regarding the future? The ax may be dull.
Are you struggling to be as effective as you once were? The ax may be dull.
In any and all of these things we often find ourselves pressing on with a hope that somehow, somewhere at some time there’ll be a breakthrough. Unfortunately for many the pressing on adds to the pressure that takes many of us out of contention.
The ability to contend for things requires strength. When you feel depleted, inadequate or vulnerable you can’t contend. You can’t fight. Your ax is dull. You become overwhelmed. And often times the pressure increases when we feel inadequate because we feel guilty.
Many of us know how to keep working, better then we know how to ask for help. If you are a doer. If you are a giver – you must replenish. If you’re empty right now you probably have failed to create borders and intentional protections for your own good.
People come to you because they know you can, and if you do – they expect you will. And in this you often get taken for granted. No one can control what comes in and out of you, except you.
It’s time to set aside. It’s time to come unto Him. It’s time to receive. And, it’s time to put on.
